RUN-EU Student Research Colloquium 2025: Showcasing Cutting-Edge Research at TUS

From 17 to 21 February 2025, the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS), Ireland, celebrated its Research Week, featuring an impressive 69 events across its campuses.
A standout highlight was the RUN-EU Student Research Colloquium 2025, hosted at the Moylish Campus in the vibrant city of Limerick.
This event brought together students, researchers, and academics from across Europe, creating a dynamic platform to showcase cutting-edge research, engage in thought-provoking discussions, and celebrate the power of collaboration and innovation.



Highlights of the Colloquium






The colloquium was a vibrant hub of activities, featuring:
- Research Student Presentations: Students presented their research projects in 5-minute sessions, receiving valuable feedback from peers and experts.
- Poster Presentations: Researchers from the RUN-EU alliance and TUS displayed their work, sparking insightful conversations and collaborations.
- Interactive Workshops: Sessions on publishing research and intellectual property (IP) protection equipped participants with essential skills for their academic and professional journeys.
- Facility Tours: Attendees explored TUS’s state-of-the-art research facilities, gaining inspiration from the university’s commitment to education excellence.
- Awards for Excellence: The Student Research Colloquium showcased a diverse range of student research from across the RUN-EU institutions, highlighting innovative ideas and academic excellence. Among the awards presented were the Best Presentation Award and the Best Poster Award.
Diana Santos from the Polytechnic University of Leiria (IPLeiria) won the Best Presentation Award for her research titled “BBC Pack – Biodegradable Barrier Coating for Food Packaging”, under the supervision of Dr Ana Augusto and Dr Susana Silva (IPLeiria), and Dr Patrick Murray (TUS).
Diana delivered an exceptional presentation, articulating the significance of the research and the strategy employed to address the research aims in a manner that catered to a diverse audience.
The Best Poster Award was presented to Pirkko Väkimies from the Häme University of Applied Sciences (HAMK) for her research titled “Detection of fallen deadwood from ALS LiDAR 3D point cloud data using machine learning”, supervised by Outi-Maaria Sietiö and Tuomo Kauranne (HAMK). Pirkko’s passion for her research was evident in her work, with the judges noting that her research has the potential to make a great impact in the field.

The Student Research Colloquia are a core part of the RUN-EU initiative, which aims to drive regional collaboration and innovation through education and research. The event embodies the collective vision of the RUN-EU alliance to create an interconnected and vibrant academic community, contributing to establishing a European Zone of Interregional Development.
