Lifestyle Management in Chronic Disease: The Role of Physical Activity & Nutrition

The Short Advanced Programme (SAP) ‘Lifestyle Management in Chronic Disease: The Role of Physical Activity & Nutrition’ is jointly coordinated by the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS), and the Polytechnic University of Leiria (IPLeiria).

This SAP aims to consolidate participants’ knowledge and skills in assessing physical activity and nutritional habits, deepen their understanding of effective health promotion interventions for chronic disease populations, and facilitate their practical application in real-world contexts.

This programme is aligned with “Goal 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being” of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by improving access to quality healthcare services while reducing existing regional development disparities in the European Union.

Academic recognition
To be defined by each Home Institution.
In general terms, most students will have this RUN-EU SAP certified in the Diploma Supplement, as a minimal condition.

Eligible participants
RUN-EU students from all cycles of studies, with particular emphasis on postgraduate students from Sports Sciences, Athletic Therapy and Rehabilitation, Physiotherapy and other allied health professionals.

Learning outcomes
By the end of this Short Advanced Programme, students will be able to:

  • Recognise the importance of and acknowledge the international recommendations for physical activity and nutrition in health promotion for patients with chronic diseases.
  • Explore the (individual, social, and environmental) factors that can influence patients’ physical activity behaviours and nutritional habits.
  • Identify different methods of monitoring daily physical activity and nutritional habits, as well as the parameters to consider when selecting an instrument.
  • Appraise the practical application of a range of health promotion intervention types for individuals with chronic disease.

Selection criteria
Order of submission, background, motivation, wide representation of fields of study and balanced participation of RUN-EU member institutions. A maximum of 30 students will be selected.
Ensuring diversity and a wide representation of students from different RUN-EU partners and (study) backgrounds.

Scholarships
The selected students will receive travel grants based on the travel distance and the subsistence costs in the country the SAP is offered in:
