Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) at TUS

25 January 2025

There has been a lot of activity in Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) at the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) in Academic Year 2023-24. These activities are in line with the Strategic Goals outlined in the TUS EDI Strategy 2024 – 2027.

TUS is committed to supporting work across the nine equality grounds enshrined in Irish legislation – gender, disability, religion, family status, age, marital status, sexual orientation, race, and traveller community membership.

TUS has included socioeconomic status and the Roma community as additional equality grounds.

Events

The EDI office has run a wide range of events throughout the AY 2023/24 to raise awareness of equality issues and foster an inclusive campus culture. Highlights include the unveiling of Pride-themed works on our campuses, a talk by Eve McDowell on her successful campaign for stalking legislation in Ireland, and “A Date with Disability” where staff and students shared their experiences of navigating life in TUS with their learning differences.

Training

A diverse array of EDI trainings were also delivered in 2023-24. These include the Aurora Women’s Leadership Programme, which saw 13 participants certified in 2024, and Sexual Violence Disclosure Training from Galway Rape Crisis Centre, with many trainees then becoming Ending Sexual Violence and Harassment (ESVH) Allies (named contacts in receiving disclosures & signposting to supports). The EDI office has also curated a comprehensive suite of trainings under the nine equality grounds on a dedicated EDI Training Moodle page.
