SHORT ADVANCED PROGRAMME

Event-driven Innovation: Zooming In on The World Surf League 2024

9 January 2024

Event-driven Innovation: Zooming In On The World Surf League 2024 is a RUN-EU Short Advanced Programme (SAP) jointly coordinated by the NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences (NHL Stenden), the Polytechnic University of Leiria (IPLeiria), and the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS).

Innovation plays a critical role in today’s events industry to deliver unique experiences to guests and satisfy a wide range of stakeholders and interests.

During this SAP, students will prototype and test innovative solutions during the World Surf League 2024 (MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal) stage in Peniche, Portugal’s top surfing destination. Their design challenge will focus on maximising the impact of the event to ensure sustainable socio-economic, cultural and environmental benefits for the local community.

This SAP introduces students to the concept of event-driven innovation in the context of Peniche, a peninsula with a unique ecosystem. Students will work in groups and use the design thinking method to develop a solution for stakeholders. The solution will be tested during one of the largest surfing events in the world.
