The Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) is hosting the Online Workshop ‘Being an examiner for Research Degrees (Master’s by Research and PhD)’ on 16 October 2026.
This training session builds essential skills for serving as an internal or external examiner for a research thesis. What distinguishes a Master’s by Research degree from a PhD, and what delineates ‘good’ exam practice from ‘excellence’? Critical discussion of what constitutes good practice when acting as an examiner is key to continued quality assurance (QA) of research education

No previous knowledge is required.
It will focus on:
- The roles of internal and external examiners for research degrees
- The differences and similarities in examining taught programmes versus research programmes
- Elements of good practice – sharing and discussion!
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Critically examine the current research literature (state of the art) on research degree examinations
- Identify areas of good practice in advance of, during and post research degree examinations
- Identify what constitutes a ‘good’ thesis and an ‘excellent’ one.
