ONLINE WORKSHOP
Achieving Excellence in BNIM Panel Analysis
1 October 2025
The Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) is organising the Online Workshop ‘Achieving Excellence in BNIM Panel Analysis Advancing the State of the Art in the Biographic Narrative Interpretive Method (BNIM)’ on 3 November 2025.
This is the second training session for RUN-IRI, led by Dr Lisa Moran (TUS) and Mr Daniel Guigui (UCD) on the Biographic Narrative Interpretive Method (BNIM). In the previous training session, the focus was on the complexities and richness of the BNIM interviewing technique.
This session extends the first training, and is oriented to the method of analysis, ‘Twin Track’ analysis in BNIM using interpretive panels. In biographical narrative research, interpretive panels are widely used, but there is limited training on how to use them and on their ethical considerations. It will address practical aspects of assembling panels and using them to perform detailed analysis and interpretation of qualitative data. This session will give participants who attended the last session a chance to deepen their understanding of BNIM’s analytical components. There will also be a recap of the first session, allowing those who missed it to join this second session. We present our ongoing BNIM work to ground the session and its associated exercises in practical, real-world experiences and scenarios.

Target group
Biographic narrative researchers (and people who are interested in biographies), PhD and Master’s by Research students, scientists who are interested in cross-disciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary work with social scientists.
Previous knowledge required
None. We will provide a brief recap of session one.
We will also provide some materials in advance so that participants can review them before the session.
It will focus on:
- Why interpretive panels are significant in biographic research.
- The function of interpretive panels in biographic narrative research generally, and with specific reference to BNIM.
- Practical and ethical dimensions of interpretive panels.
- Intricate aspects of each component of Twin Track Analysis, including Biographic Data Chronology (BDC) and the Text Sequence Structure (TSS).
Learning Outcomes:
- Describe the various stages and steps involved in BNIM data analysis.
- Examine the complexities and richness of twin track analysis, including Biographic Data Chronology (BDC) and the Text Sequence Structure (TSS). Explores the complexities of interpretive panels in the context of researcher reflections and extant research.
