The Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) is organising the Online Workshop ‘Designing and operationalising professional doctorate programmes’, on 5 March 2026.
This online training focuses on the state-of-the-art in designing and operationalising professional doctorate programmes.
In the past ten years, professional doctorates have grown in prominence in the landscape of doctoral provision in Ireland, in some parts of Europe and internationally.
This online training discusses the core elements of professional doctorate programmes, what distinguishes them from structured and unstructured PhDs, and how to effectively design them.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Discern what a professional doctorate programme is
- Explain how it is different and similar to other doctoral degree programmes
- Describe some of the principal design issues that need to be considered when designing these programmes
- Explain some of the main extant research on professional doctorate programmes about design, operationalisation and student experience.
