BLENDED INTENSIVE PROGRAMME

Drawing and Technology
The Role of Drawing and Technology Towards the Preservation of Cultural Heritage

19 March 2025

The Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) ‘Drawing and Technology: The Role of Drawing and Technology Towards the Preservation of Cultural Heritage’, is jointly coordinated by the Polytechnic University of Cávado and Ave (IPCA), the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS), and the Howest University of Applied Sciences (Howest).

In today’s technology-driven world, what role does traditional drawing play in preserving our cultural heritage? This BIP explores the intersection of traditional artistic values with contemporary art and design practices alongside technological advancements.

Set in the culturally rich city of Barcelos, students will be encouraged to conduct architectural studies, examine museum artefacts, and capture the vibrant presence of the city’s inhabitants through drawing. These traditional approaches to illustration will be developed into digital formats, culminating in an augmented reality exhibition walk showcasing students’ work.

The course aims to provide an in-depth exploration of visual note-taking and the methodology of thinking through drawing. Students will engage in the process of making visual and contextual observations, establishing meaningful connections for narrative and composition.

Additionally, instruction will be provided in perspective studies, the significance of under-drawing, and various observational drawing techniques. Students will also receive guidance on storytelling, conceptual art, and the creation of digitalised pieces for augmented reality exhibitions.
