Welcome to the Technological University of Shannon

24 January 2025

The Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) is one of Ireland’s newest and most ambitious higher education institutions.

Formed with the vision of promoting innovation, research, and professional development, TUS serves as a significant hub for students across the country and beyond.

The university plays a key role in Ireland’s development as a knowledge economy, with strong industry connections and a focus on applied research and technology-driven programmes.

Formation of TUS: a Brief History

The Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) was officially established on 1 October 2021. It was created through the merger of two well-established institutes of technology: Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT) and Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT). This unification was part of a broader strategy by the Irish government to form technological universities that could drive regional development and offer enhanced educational opportunities.

TUS is named after the River Shannon, Ireland’s longest river, which geographically connects its campuses. The two notable forts along the River Shannon in Ireland are King John’s Castle in Limerick and Athlone Castle in Athlone.

The TUS logo features a fort, symbolising the connection between these two historic landmarks and emphasising the university’s geographical and cultural ties. Interestingly, in the Irish language, “TUS” translates to “Tús,” meaning “beginning” or “start”.

This dual meaning captures the symbolic essence of the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS). It represents a new chapter in education for the region. The name reflects both a fresh start and a commitment to innovation, resonating with students embarking on their educational journeys and with the university itself as a newly established institution.

TUS Campi

TUS operates across multiple campi in the Midwest and Midlands regions of Ireland. Each campus offers unique strengths, specialised facilities, and educational focuses.

Athlone Campus

The Athlone campus is one of the two original pillars of TUS, providing a broad spectrum of programmes in areas such as engineering, science, business, health science, and hospitality. The Athlone campus is also a key centre for research and technology transfer, supporting industries in Ireland’s Midlands region.

Limerick Campus (Moylish Park)

Located in the heart of Limerick city, the Moylish Park campus is the largest of the TUS campuses. It houses a wide range of programmes, especially in engineering, business, creative technologies, and science. The campus is equipped with advanced research facilities and is a hub for industry collaboration.

Clonmel Campus

Situated in County Tipperary, the Clonmel campus specializes in digital media and game development programmes.
It is known for its emphasis on digital arts, creative technologies, and interactive media, providing students with state-of-the-art facilities in these fields.

Thurles Campus

The Thurles campus, also in Tipperary, focuses primarily on sports science, strength and conditioning, and business.
It is home to excellent facilities that cater to sports education and research.

Ennis Campus

Based in County Clare, the Ennis campus is relatively small but focuses on offering business, accounting, and social care programmes. Its proximity to local communities and businesses ensures strong links with regional development.
