1st International Call for Service-Learning Projects in Teaching Innovation and Social Transformation
(2024–2025)
22 December 2024
Service-Learning (S-L) projects represent an educational innovation and social transformation proposal that fosters university students’ cognitive, social, and ethical development, contributing to their personal growth and the acquisition of professional skills.
At RUN-EU, we are committed to adopting this methodology to enhance our students’ social engagement competencies and promote their internationalisation.
S-L is an educational methodology that integrates learning processes with community service activities, focusing on critical analysis and understanding of real-world social problems and needs, actively contributing to their resolution in creative ways.
This methodology can be implemented in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, integrated into teaching plans designed
by professors, in the framework of students’ internships (curricular and extracurricular), in specific S-L courses with credit recognition, or as part of thematic options for undergraduate and master’s theses.
For this call, it is required that educators from at least two partner institutions are required to collaborate with at least one association, development or social action NGO, nonprofit organisation, or any external entity with a social, environmental, and/or educational focus. These organisations may operate in other countries.
Service actions should align with various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They may focus on areas such as environmental conservation, health promotion, international cooperation, aid for individuals and groups in need, education support, functional diversity, citizenship, heritage preservation, and more.
Purpose and Objectives of the Call
This call aims to promote, support, recognise, and disseminate teaching innovation and social transformation projects that utilise the Service-Learning methodology within the teaching-learning processes at RUN-EU member institutions.
Specific Objectives
A) Support and promote teaching initiatives based on S-L methodology.
B) Identify and disseminate best practices in S-L methodologies.
C) Foster partnerships with social organisations, public institutions, and educational institutions to identify needs and develop S-L projects that drive social transformation.
D) Facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration and networking for the development of S-L projects.
E) Contribute effectively to the development of specific and transversal competencies in each academic programme.
F) Promote international projects, particularly in environments with fewer opportunities.
G) Strengthen the RUN-EU alliance and institutionalise the S-L methodology across all member universities.
Participants and Requirements
- Faculty and researchers from any RUN-EU member universities and social entities within their respective regions may apply. For internships, course initiatives, or undergraduate/master’s theses, proposals must be linked to a specific degree or postgraduate programme.
- Each institution will determine how to include this activity in its teaching proposal. At the University of Burgos, approved proposals must be incorporated into the relevant teaching guide by adding a phrase in the methodology section, such as: “An educational activity aligned with the Service-Learning Programme objectives will be offered.”
- Each project must designate a faculty member as coordinator, with other contributing faculty members specified. For faculty not teaching the course, their roles must be detailed.
- Projects will be implemented in the 2025/2026 academic year.
Institutional Recognition
Upon project completion and submission of final evaluation reports, participants will receive a certified document issued by FAPSA.
Financial Support
Each institution will allocate a budget of €500 per project from the RUN-EU project. Additional funds may be provided for projects involving their faculty. Universities would also offer STA grants to support faculty exchanges during the preparation of international activities or Erasmus funding for students through BIPs.
Project Expenses
Expenses must be directly related to the Project and must be previously approved by the S-L Committee. Each institution will be responsible for monitoring the expenses of its faculty and/or students.
The final allocation of the budget for each submitted project will be based on the score obtained during the selection process and the evaluation conducted by the RUN-EU Service-Learning Committee.
Projects carried out in rural or depressed areas and aligned with RUN-EU’s priority areas will be positively evaluated. Additionally, the inclusion of COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) among student groups for action development will also be considered a positive criterion.
Eligible Expenses
- Costs directly related to project execution, including materials and training activities, with proper justification.
- Local transportation costs for participants, provided they are justified.
Excluded Expenses
- Expenses that violate institutional procedures and regulations.
- Unauthorised expenses or those incurred before the approval or after the conclusion of the projects.
- Payments in cash or kind to project members.
Invoices for expenses incurred during the first semester must be submitted by 30 November 2025, and those for the second semester by 31 May 2026. Expenses submitted after these dates will not be eligible.
Application Deadlines and Submission
Applications must be submitted from 9 January to 22 April 2025 by email to the RUN-EU Office of each university, together with this completed annex:
EVALUATION AND SELECTION
The RUN-EU S-L Committee will evaluate proposals based on the rubric in ANNEX II (Evaluation Rubric) and may suggest improvements or modifications for incomplete aspects. Proposals not updated within the given timeframe will be excluded.
Selected initiatives will be included in the S-L project catalogue, available on the RUNEU portal.
Provisional results will be published within a month after the submission deadline on the RUN-EU ESEC webpage, allowing for a 5-day claim period. Claims will be resolved within 15 days. Final decisions will be published on the RUN-EU portal. In the event the Project is not executed, those responsible must communicate this decision via email.
For all projects, it is mandatory to submit a final report by 9 June 2026, filling in a specific form: ANNEX III (Final Report).
