10 October 2024

The event ‘Shaping Interregional Cooperation for Innovation‘ took place on 3 October in the Auditorium of the University of Burgos (UBU) in Spain.

More than 150 participants, leading experts, representatives of universities, companies and institutions from the eight European RUN-EU regions, discussed the challenges and opportunities of interregional cooperation, explored funding opportunities and presented success stories. The meeting was a collaborative space for capacity building, exchange of experiences, good practices and networking.

In her speech, Ileana Greca Dufranc, Vice-Rector for Internationalisation and Cooperation at the University of Burgos, underlined the importance of this type of initiative for strengthening innovation in Europe:

‘This event is key to enriching our societies and advancing in cooperation with the European Union. It responds to the priority objective of RUN-EU European University: the transformation of the regions through the attraction and training of talent, the promotion of innovation and research and public-private collaboration with institutional and business partners and NGO entities, as well as the transfer and dissemination of science to society.’

The importance of aligning with European policies to promote innovation in the region has been highlighted by Roberto Saiz Alonso, territorial delegate of the Junta de Castilla y León Region (Spain):

‘We live in a global world that demands sustainability and constant innovation. Public administrations, together with universities and companies, must facilitate this change. We are here to work together and take advantage of all the tools at our disposal, including European funding opportunities, to ensure that our regions can continue to move forward.’

In the same event, Cristina Ayala, mayor of Burgos, reaffirmed the city’s commitment to international cooperation:

‘Burgos is a province with a very dynamic business fabric, and to continue growing, it is essential to promote the knowledge transfer between the University and industry. This type of event allows us to strengthen our alliances and attract European funds that are essential for the development of our city and our region.’

This forum highlighted the crucial role of interregional cooperation in addressing the common challenges facing Europe’s regions. Attendees had the opportunity to participate in round tables and networking activities to move towards innovative solutions for these regions.

The activities continued with the organisation of thematic working groups focusing on cooperation, innovation transfer and funding opportunities, an ideal space to discuss cooperation strategies and explore new forms of innovation at a regional level.
