Embarking on RUN-EU’s 2nd Cycle: Kick-Off at TUS

18 January 2024

RUN-EU made history today when the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) became the first Irish university to lead a European University Alliance.

At the inaugural meeting of the Regional University Network – European University (RUN-EU) 2.0, held at the Moylish Campus in Limerick, TUS hosted the Presidents of member universities from our seven countries, including new members the University of Burgos (UBU), Spain and the Howest University of Applied Sciences, Belgium.

The presidents, led by TUS President Vincent Cunnane, also met with Limerick City and County Council and other regional stakeholders, highlighting the importance and opportunity of TUS leadership to the regions it serves.

Welcoming his European colleagues, Professor Cunnane said:

‘Today marks another significant milestone in the history of our young University. I am honoured to be the first Irish President of a European University and I have no doubt that RUN-EU will make a meaningful difference not just to our University but to all of the regions we serve, through innovative programmes, research, engagement and mobility of students, staff and partners.’

Liam Brown, TUS Vice-President for Research Development and Innovation added:

‘Drawing on the expertise of the alliance which is now more than 100,000 students and staff, RUN-EU will make a significant impact across the key societal challenges of the digital and green transitions along with social inclusion.’

Today’s launch marks a significant milestone as the Alliance enters its next phase. The four-year RUN-EU 2.0 cycle has successfully secured €14.4 million from the European Commission’s ERASMUS programme.

The core goal of RUN-EU is to enhance the competitiveness of European education. This includes creating a streamlined mobility pathway for staff and students, fostering a collaborative culture and enriching training, study and research opportunities.

Through strategic cooperation with local governments, industry and institutions such as local authorities, RUN-EU will continue to pioneer, facilitate and strengthen regional development with a European focus.
