EVENT
RUN-EU INNOTHON at FHV: Smart Cities and Smart Villages
26 February 2026
On 3 and 4 March 2026, the RUN-EU Innothon will bring together young innovators at the Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences (FHV), in Dornbirn, for two days of creativity, collaboration and solution design centred around the theme of Smart Cities & Smart Villages.
Organised by the Research Centre for Microtechnology with real-life tasks from the City of Dornbirn (Pionierstadt Dornbirn), this in-person innovation hackathon invites students to work in small multidisciplinary teams on authentic urban and rural challenges. By combining digital innovation, sustainability and economic perspectives, participants will explore how smarter, greener and more liveable communities can be shaped for the future.
Across two full days, participating teams will immerse themselves in problem discovery, concept development and storytelling as they refine concrete proposals and communicate their ideas. With guidance from mentors and real-world stimulus, students will not only identify pressing local challenges but also prototype forward-thinking solutions that are impactful, scalable and rooted in both technological and societal insight.
The overarching challenge of the Innothon is framed around designing a smart, climate-fit and circular quartier of the future. Each team will explore this shared context from a distinct angle, focusing on elements such as climate-friendly daily mobility, digital platforms for circular building materials, data-driven green infrastructure management, or smart land use and parking optimisation. Despite these different perspectives, all solutions will contribute to a cohesive vision of future-ready neighbourhoods where innovation meets sustainability and community benefit.

Day 1
Will begin with an energising welcome and orientation session, followed by an introduction to the core concepts of Smart Cities and Smart Villages.
Teams will be formed with diverse roles – including idea development, technology, business impact and video production – to balance strengths and ensure collaborative work.
Participants will then engage in problem definition and ideation workshops before drafting their Innovation Canvases and planning their video pitches, mapping out how they will tell their story in a compelling, structured way.
Day 2
Is devoted to refinement and production.
Teams will sharpen their concepts, add measurable impact indicators, and produce their 3-minute video presentations, working through scripting, filming and editing phases.
By mid-afternoon, all Innovation Canvases and videos will be submitted for final evaluation.
In the closing sessions, each team will present their work to a professional jury composed of representatives from the City of Dornbirn, FHV and other local partners.
Presentations will include the screening of the team’s video, followed by a live Q&A.
Projects will be evaluated based on clarity of problem definition, degree of innovation, integration of smart technologies, sustainability impact, feasibility, and the overall quality of both canvas and video.
The RUN-EU Innothon 2026 is more than a competition – it is a platform where young people can practise entrepreneurial thinking, develop digital and economic literacy, and forge impactful narratives about the future of their communities.
By engaging with real societal challenges and envisioning future-fit solutions, participants will contribute to shaping smarter and more sustainable urban and rural environments across Europe.
