SHORT ADVANCED PROGRAMME

Socio-Economic Transition in the EUAcademic Seminar

5 March 2025

The Short Advanced Programme (SAP) ‘Socio-Economic Transition in the EU – Academic Seminar’, is jointly coordinated by the NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences (NHL Stenden) and the Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences (FHV).

The European Union (EU) is undergoing a significant socio-economic transition driven by multiple factors, including globalisation, technological advancements, demographic shifts, and environmental challenges. On 10 March 2020, the European Commission presented ‘A New Industrial Strategy for Europe’.  It laid out a plan for how the EU’s world-leading industry could lead the twin green and digital transitions, drawing on the strength of its traditions, its businesses and its people to enhance its competitiveness. These transitions are crucial for the EU to maintain its competitiveness in the global economy. As traditional industries decline, new sectors such as technology, green energy, and digital services are emerging, reshaping labour markets, trade dynamics, and economic policies. For the EU to stay competitive, it must navigate these transitions effectively by fostering innovation, enhancing skills, and addressing social inequalities that might arise from structural changes.

While the European Union was not included in the first round of US tariffs, which affected Mexico, Canada, and China, President USA has suggested that the bloc, given its large trade surplus with the US, could be next. Goldman Sachs forecasts eurozone gross domestic product growth at 0.7% in 2025, notably below the 1% consensus estimate and the 1.1% projection from the European Central Bank in December.

Additionally, investing in education, research, and sustainable development will be critical in ensuring that Europe remains a global leader in advanced industries while maintaining its social cohesion. This transition is not just economic but also deeply intertwined with social and cultural adaptation, requiring EU member states to work together to build a resilient and inclusive future.

This SAP will provide participants with the opportunity to explore a range of literature, databases, initiatives, and case studies to examine the potential avenues for socio-economic transition. Participants will collaborate in various roles, leveraging their skills as academic writers, researchers,  and innovators. Together, they will contribute to the development of an academically focused paper that highlights the resilience and competitiveness of the EU, showcasing insights and opportunities for its continued growth and adaptability.

Learning outcomes
By the end of this Short Advanced Programme, students will be able to:

  • Identify and critically analyse the key drivers of socio-economic transitions in the EU, including technological innovation, globalisation, and environmental sustainability. They will also develop the ability to frame these topics in a structured academic paper, ensuring a thorough literature review, clear argumentation, and evidence-based conclusions.
  • Apply critical thinking to evaluate the social and economic challenges arising from socio-economic transitions, such as inequality, unemployment, and social exclusion. As part of their academic writing process, they will need to construct well-supported arguments, incorporating diverse perspectives and presenting thoughtful, evidence-backed solutions.
  • Students will develop the skills to effectively incorporate quantitative databases and analysis into their research on socio-economic transitions, enabling them to communicate their findings through structured academic papers. This includes synthesising quantitative data, presenting clear and coherent arguments supported by evidence, and ensuring adherence to academic conventions such as citation, referencing, and ethical research standards. Additionally, students will refine their ability to present their research in both oral and written forms.
  • Students will cultivate academic analytical skills to interpret shifts in the EU, recognising emerging industries and the evolving demand for skills amidst socio-economic transformations. In their academic writing, they will be expected to integrate these findings within the broader context of economic change, demonstrating clear structure, coherence, and critical analysis.
