Commitment and Impact in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) at the University of Burgos

9 August 2024

The University of Burgos (UBU) has strongly committed to equality, non-discrimination, recognising diversity, and inclusion, and opposing all forms of violence. This commitment is reflected in its Ethical Code, which prioritises equity, equal opportunities, tolerance, and respect for diversity. Additionally, the institution acts against any form of harassment. It ensures no discrimination based on gender, culture, religion, sexual orientation, and more, driven by its conviction to move towards an increasingly inclusive society.

The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) model at UBU

The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) model at UBU aims to contribute to the advancement of social progress. In this regard, it has recently established the Centre for the Promotion of Diversity and Social Inclusion (UBUInclusiva), a key component in fostering participation and true equality within the university community. This centre works in coordination with our Diversity Support Unit and the Equal Opportunities Unit. It aligns with international human rights and equality guidelines and focuses on achieving specific sustainable development goals related to inclusive education and gender equality.

Actions and outcomes of the DEI model at the University of Burgos

Diversity

In this area, the UBU has shown a notable commitment by being selected as the representative university institution on the National Advisory Council of the Spanish Diversity and Inclusion Index. This index, funded by the Government of Spain, is a well-regarded tool that assesses the involvement of organisations in creating respectful and inclusive work environments.

Additionally, the university maintains active collaborations with associations such as ARASNBUR and ADACEBUR, focusing on linguistic diversity and support for people with disabilities, respectively.
This demonstrates the organization’s dedication to promoting diversity in its immediate environment.
Also, the University is developing diagnostic tools and integrating data into digital systems to facilitate effective measures that address the broadest sense of university diversity.

Equity

In terms of equity, UBU places a strong emphasis on Sustainable Development Goal 10, which aims to reduce inequality within and among countries.
The institution strives to ensure equal opportunities through numerous initiatives, such as the creation of specific programmes for migrants and refugees, and the promotion of empowerment for African women through postgraduate training programmes.

Inclusion

Regarding inclusion, UBU actively engages in promoting inclusive and equitable education (Sustainable Development Goal 4).
This commitment is demonstrated by its efforts to make educational programmes accessible to all populations, providing resources and opportunities for continuous learning to the entire community, and promoting participation in cultural and educational activities open to the public.
